Magic vs Magick

It doesn’t matter if you believe or not believe in spells. It has been a part of our history since the stone age and are still a part of many people’s culture today. Maybe the most fitting word regarding the history of magic were written over a century ago by the renowned historian Ozmar in 821 GUE. He wrote:

“The greatest irony is this: that the ancients of our kind were nearer to knowing the truth about Science than those who call themselves scientists today. Science has taught us much and given us new words for old mysteries. But beneath these words are mysteries, and beneath them more mysteries. The pursuit of Magic has given these mysteries meaning and provided for our people great benefits unrealized as yet by science. One day perhaps , a great union will be formed between magic and Science, and the final mysteries will be solved.”

When christianity with its great force of destruction came across the globe they destroyed much of the ancient culture and knowledge. They murdered magicians, witches, sorcerers, shamans and much of the magic disappeared. But some of it survived and the knowledge are spreading today. But there is a difference in the ancient magic and modern magic. The difference can be seen with magic and magick. Magic today is strongly connected to illusions and stage performers. So there had to be a change wich came with Aleister Crowley. The word magick was chosen by Crowley to differentiate his concept from other practices, such as stage magic. John Symonds and Kenneth Grant attach a deeper occult significance to this preference. Crowley definedĀ  Magick as “the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with the will”, including both “mundane” acts of will as well as ritual magic. Crowley claimed that “it is theoretically possible to cause in any object any change of which that object is capable by nature”.

If you want to know more about magick I strongly recommend Magick (Book 4) by Aleister Crowley and if you are more interested in magic and illusions just search on google, buy a hat, a rabbit and a deck of cards and practice.

Witches’ lair and spirit-wolf night
Ancient Ones bring second sight
Blood and bones of those before
Help me with this little chore.
Herbs and talc and natural things
At my bidding, safety bring,
North for Earth, and East for Air
I summon Spirit to help me here.
